About Us
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an off-grid cottage?
The cottage is solar powered to meet amenities for daily living. There is no direct power from a hydro company. The cottage relies primarily on solar panels to charge the batteries that provide the power. Should the batteries that are charged by solar, get depleted the generator will kick in to replenish the battery power.
Is there a washer and dryer on site?
Yes there is a washing machine and a dryer onsite. They are located in an out- building next to the cottage. It is important to be mindful of being off grid, and doing laundry be limited. No more than once per week is preferred. Drying clothes can be done on the clothesline. But the dryer is available for convenience or in the event that the weather is not favorable.
Is there a BBQ?
There is a BBQ on the back deck close to the eating area. The BBQ is directly connected to the cottage propane tanks. Please be mindful to turn off the BBQ when not in use.

If the cottage is off-grid, how can there be Wi-fi?
There is a modem that provides the Wi-fi connection to Explor. The modem plugs into the electrical system just like at home. The benefit of being off-grid, the Wi-fi will not get lost in the event of power outages. There is redundancy built in with the generator. The generator will kick in, should the battery levels get depleted.
How large is the property ?
The property of River Ridge is 2.5 acres, but appears to be larger, because it is surrounded by additional acres of crown land. This makes this property quite special, there are no neighbors, and provides the utmost in privacy
Are there walking trails on the property?
We are in the process of creating trails on the property, when completed they will be clearly marked.
Fishing licenses?
Fishing licenses are required for all recreational fishing in inland waters of New Brunswick and apply to all fish except for salmon. As regulated by the province, salmon fishing requires a special class license and activated tags for the season. Fishing licenses for inland water fishing are available at the Canadian Tire store in St. Stephen. The phone number is 506-466-4110. The cost for non-New Brunswick residents is approximately $26 for seven days or $20 for three days. This would apply to any fish species other than salmon. The fishing at the cottage is inland water fishing.
